The number of women in prisons and jails has tripled over the last decade. In response to the need to focus attention on the different needs of women offenders, the Office of Justice Programs sponsored a National Symposium on Women Offenders.
Abstract
Although women offenders are only a small minority of the Nation's incarcerated population, their real numbers have tripled within the past decade. Women offenders have different needs and circumstances from their male counterparts. Therefore, different management approaches and programming are needed to ensure parity and to provide intervention that reduces recidivism. The National Symposium on Women Offenders, held December 13-15 in Washington, D.C., brought together more than 300 key policymakers from criminal justice systems across the country to discuss the issues women offenders pose for the criminal justice system. Sessions and workshops included; Women's Prison Reform: Past, Present, Future; Caring for the Children; and What Works for Women Offenders? Appendixes included Symposium Agenda; Participants List; and Selected Symposium Materials.
