Abstract
After completing this classroom segment, students should be able to obtain estimates of the nature and extent of criminal victimization in the United States; list the various types of crimes that can victimize people; compare the extent to which people living in the United States become victims of various crime types; understand how the risk of victimization varies by demographic and socioeconomic characteristics; and compare the fear of victimization with the actual risk of victimization for various crime types. This classroom segment can be modified for use in college courses of various disciplines, including, but not limited to, history, psychology, sociology, and criminal justice. Some faculty may need to prepare by reading suggested source materials. This material requires 50-75 minutes of class time. Discussion questions are suggested, and faculty are provided guidance for instruction and discussion related to each slide in the PowerPoint presentation of the course material. 18 references and a listing of national resources for crime victims
