This report presents the questionnaire used in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Study of Substance Use Habits of College Student-Athletes, along with the percentage of respondents who checked each questionnaire item.
Abstract
Sections of the questionnaire address institutional and background information and respondents' use of anabolic steroids, ephedrine, nutritional/dietary supplements other than ephedrine, tobacco leaf and snuff, cigarettes, alcohol, amphetamines (excluding ecstasy), marijuana, ecstasy, hallucinogens, and cocaine/crack. The final section of the questionnaire asks respondents what effect specific types of drug use have had on their athletic performance and general health. Respondents are also asked to estimate how many of their teammates have used any of 14 substances in the last 12 months. Another questionnaire item pertains to how often respondents have experienced specified events or circumstances due to drinking or drug use during the last 12 months. Regarding the use of anabolic steroids, 0.3 percent of respondents reported using such a substance during their freshman year of college, and 0.6 percent reported using them after their freshman year; 0.7 percent reported using an anabolic steroid in the last 12 months. Regarding ephedrine, 1.7 percent reported using it in the last 12 months, and 0.8 percent used it in the last month. The use of tobacco leaf and snuff in the last month was reported by 12.3 percent of the respondents. Cigarette use in the last month was reported by 9.2 percent of respondents. Alcohol use in the last month was reported by 65.4 percent of respondents, and 50.8 percent reported they started consuming alcoholic beverages in high school. The use of marijuana in the last month was reported by 9.2 percent of respondents. The use of cocaine/crack in the last month was reported by 0.9 percent of respondents. Just over 20 percent of respondents reported that the use of alcoholic beverages had harmed their athletic performance.
