THIS STATISTICAL AND NARRATIVE REPORT SUMMARIZES DATA ON JUVENILE OFFENSES FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR 1977 WITH COMPARISONS FOR THE YEARS 1974-1977.
Abstract
IN NEBRASKA THREE JURISDICTIONS HAVE SEPARATE JUVENILE COURTS, DOUGLAS, LANCASTER AND SARPY COUNTIES. IN THE OTHER COUNTIES JUVENILES ARE HANDLED SEPARATELY BY THE COUNTY COURT OR THE DISTRICT COURT. THIS REPORT PULLS TOGETHER JUVENILE STATISTICS FROM ALL THREE COURT SOURCES. THE FIGURES SHOW THAT NEBRASKA HAD A TOTAL OF 5,140 JUVENILE COURT REFERRALS IN 1977, THAT 45 PERCENT OF THESE CASES WERE FROM THE COUNTIES WITH SEPARATE JUVENILE COURTS, AND THAT THE NUMBER OF NEW CASES SEEMS TO BE STABLIZING. MOST JUVENILES WERE CHARGED WITH LARCENY, BURGLARY, AND VANDALISM. MALES WERE REFERRED SIX TIMES MORE OFTEN THAN FEMALES FOR DELINQUENCY OFFENSES. THE RATIO WAS ABOUT EQUAL FOR STATUS OFFENSES. FOR MAJOR OFFENSES, 43 PERCENT OF CASES ENDED IN PROBATION, 32 WERE DISMISSED OR HAD NO FURTHER ACTION, 13 PERCENT HAD SPECIAL HANDLING, AND THE REST WERE REFERRED TO PUBLIC OR PRIVATE AGENCIES. MOST MINOR OFFENSES RESULTED IN PROBATION, DISMISSAL, OR SUCH SPECIAL HANDLING AS RESTITUTION TO THE VICTIM. GRAPHS AND TABLES PRESENT THE DATA. APPENDIXES GIVE VARIABLE CATEGORIES AND CORRESPONDING SECTIONS ON THE JUVENILE COURT STATISTICAL FORM, A BREAKDOWN OF OFFENDERS BY AGE, SEX, AND ETHNIC GROUP, AND A BREAKDOWN BY COUNTY. (GLR)
