Abstract
AN AGENCY, SUCH AS THE ONE IN INDIA, MAY SERVE A VARIETY OF PURPOSES. IT CAN COORDINATE THE VARIOUS AGENCIES WORKING IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL DEFENSE. IT MAY ACTIVELY PROMOTE THE APPLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC TECHNIQUES THROUGH COORDINATION AT THE FUNCTIONAL LEVEL. IT MAY ARRANGE FOR CONSULTATIONS WITH SPECIALISTS WITHIN THE COUNTRY AS WELL AS ABROAD ON MATTERS LIKE PRISON INDUSTRIES, INSTITUTIONAL ARCHITECTURE, CASE WORK TECHNIQUE, MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT, STANDARDIZATION OF SCORES FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS. IT MAY SERVE AS A LINK BETWEEN THOSE PLANNING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILD CARE, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, ORGANIZATION OF LOCAL BODIES, SOCIAL SECURITY, TRAINING OF PERSONNEL FOR SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL RESEARCH, ON THE ONE HAND, AND THOSE DEVELOPING AND PLANNING METHODS FOR DEALING WITH OFFENDERS. IT MAY THUS BE IN A POSITION TO BRING THE PROGRAM IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL DEFENSE IN LINE WITH PLANNING FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AS A WHOLE. AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED
