SOURCES OF DATA FOR AN INFORMATION SERVICE ABOUT ARMED ROBBERY IN AUSTRALIA ARE NOTED, INCLUDING LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, BANKERS, BETTING AGENCIES, COMMERCIAL ENTITIES, AND LEGISLATIVE BODIES.
Abstract
TYPES OF INFORMATION THAT CAN BE PRODUCED BY A CRIME-SPECIFIC DATA ANALYSIS AND INFORMATION SERVICE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING: EXTENT OF CRIME AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL, EXTENT OF CRIME AT THE STATE AND TERRITORY LEVEL, PRECISE TYPE OF ARMED ROBBERY, TYPE AND NUMBER OF OFFENDERS, TYPE AND VALUE OF STOLEN PROPERTY, EXTENT OF THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS IN ARMED ROBBERY, EXTENT OF SECURITY DEVICES PROTECTING VARIOUS VICTIMS OF ARMED ROBBERY, UTILITY OF SECURITY DEVICES, MODUS OPERANDI OF EACH ROBBERY, TYPE OF WEAPON UTILIZED, NUMBER OF OCCASIONS WEAPONS WERE ACTUALLY USED, NUMBER OF PERSONS KILLED OR WOUNDED DURING A CRIME, EXTENT OF HOSTAGE TAKING FOR PROTECTION AND/OR INTIMIDATION, EFFECT OF SUCH INSTALLATIONS AS BULLET-RESISTANT GLASS, WHETHER OFFENDERS HAD PRIOR CONVICTIONS, WHETHER OFFENDERS WERE ESCAPEES FROM PRISON OR RELEASED ON BAIL OR PAROLE, AND TIME OF ROBBERY (MONTH, DAY, AND HOUR). LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, THE AUSTRALIAN BANKERS ASSOCIATION, BETTING AGENCIES, COMMERCIAL BODIES, BANK EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATIONS, AND LEGISLATIVE BODIES ARE POTENTIAL SOURCES AND USERS OF INFORMATION. COMMERCIAL BODIES INCLUDE SERVICE STATIONS, TAXI CAB COMPANIES, LICENSED LIQUOR OUTLETS, AND COMPANIES AND INDIVIDUALS HANDLING PAYROLLS. THE PROBLEM OF BAIL ABSCONDERS AND METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA FOR INCLUSION IN AN INFORMATION SERVICE ARE DISCUSSED. (DEP)
