THIS TAPE CASSETTE FROM THE THIRD NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON JUVENILE JUSTICE IDENTIFIES NEED FOR PROGRAMS WHICH PREVENT DELINQUENCY, RATHER THAN JUST PROVIDE REMEDIAL ASSISTANCE.
Abstract
THE POTENTIAL OF YOUNG PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE RESPONSIBLY IN SOCIETY MUST NOT BE NEGLECTED. PROGRAMS SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO PROBLEM CHILDREN, BUT SHOULD INCORPORATE THE RESOURCES OF ALL CHILDREN. TOO OFTEN THE RACE AND CLASS BIAS WITHIN THE CORRECTIONS FIELD HAS LACKED DEDICATION TO THE REMOVAL OF THESE BIASES. MOREOVER, THERE IS A HISTORY OF AGE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CHILDREN. COHERENT STATEMENTS OF THE PROBLEMS MUST BE DEVELOPED CONCERNING THE PROPER ATTACK ON NEGLECTED AREAS. THESE STATEMENTS SHOULD LEAD INEXORABLY TO TACTICS FOR THE CURE OF DELINQUENCY. A VARIETY OF DELINQUENCY PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE MENTIONED INCLUDING EMPLOYMENT IN COMMUNITY PROJECTS, SMALL GROUP COUNSELING TEAMS, AND MIXED AGE CONFERENCES. THE STIGMA OF DELINQUENCY MAY BE PREVENTED THROUGH THE USE OF VARIED CLASSES AND LEVELS OF STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL-BASED PROJECTS. (TWK)
