This Neighborhood Action Guide for the prevention of youth violence is designed to help organizations identify specific problems in their neighborhoods, offer possible solutions, help organize with neighbors to implement solutions, and help locate resources.
Abstract
The first step for which guidance is provided is a neighborhood assessment to determine the risk for violence. Suggestions include documentation of graffiti, the wearing of gang clothing, an increase in physical confrontations, an increase in burglaries within the last 6 months, drive-by shootings, the existence of weapons in the neighborhood or schools, and the presence of informal social groups with threatening names. The second step is to identify resources that can be used to exert a positive influence in the neighborhood. A sample agenda for the first neighborhood meeting involves discussing concerns, presenting a neighborhood profile, receiving law enforcement crime information, creating a telephone tree, and setting the next meeting time. A sample agenda for a follow-up meeting involves the prioritizing of issues, the setting of goals, work on action plans, making assignments, and setting the next meeting time. An action plan worksheet is included, and suggestions are offered for working with elected officials to address neighborhood violence.
