This monograph discusses mediation and other forms of neighborhood dispute resolution, lists some of the problems of particular concern to older persons, and provides information about new alternatives to the traditional judicial processes.
Abstract
It also presents information about citizen involvement in various programs at neighborhood or community levels. Techniques discussed include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and the ombudsman process. Thirty-two types of problems appropriate for solution through the alternative dispute resolution process are also listed. The role of volunteers as both mediators and in support roles are noted, with emphasis on the skills and energies offered by older volunteers. The analysis concludes that informal justice procedures are not always appropriate or effective, but they are providing satisfactory solutions for many individuals. Sources of additional information.
