This guide discusses best practices for parents who want to protect their children from online risks.
Abstract
This guide covers what parents need to know, where they can go for more information, and issues to raise with their children about participating in social networking. Sections provide information on initiating conversations, communicating parental values, and advice for parents of kids at different ages. Kids need to be reminded that social networking sites, chat rooms, virtual worlds, and blogs, although a place to socialize and share pictures, videos, thoughts, and plans with friends, may also have consequences offline. Special advice is given about what to do if online cyberbullying and phishing occur as well as the need to remind kids the necessity of courteous communication online. Parental controls, knowing your rights, monitoring tools, protecting your teens privacy, protecting the security of family computers, and checking out the sites that your kids visit are discussed in detail. The overall theme of the necessity of parental communication with kids is stressed throughout this guide. Glossary and a list of resources
