This issue of the Field Training Quarterly features articles on issues relevant to field training officers (FTOs) and their managers as well as other police officers.
Abstract
One article describes the role of the field training manager, whose responsibilities include assigning trainees to their FTOs, tracking the progress of each trainee through the program, evaluating the performance of FTOs, assessing the entire program, and managing trainees on a case-by-case basis. "FTO Troubleshooter" summarizes some of the problems mentioned in responses received to a survey of field training programs across the country. The experiences of the Houston Police Department in using laptop computers to complete daily observation reports during field training is discussed in another article. The "For Your Information" section presents statistics on computer use in local police departments. The final two articles include a book review and a description of a Florida field training program for newly promoted sergeants.
