In 1977, the Coos Bay Police Department (Oregon) implemented a computerized traffic records system. This was the first step in the development of a computer network system that will be complete in early 1986.
Abstract
Following computerization of the traffic record system, the Department brought its record collection system into conformance with the Integrated Criminal Apprehension Program and modified its crime reporting forms for computerization. In 1983, the Department selected and installed an IBM/PC/NET local area network system, IBM PC microcomputers for network access and local operation, and IBM PC/AT microcomputers for local operations. The network runs on MS PC/DOS, which allows easy selection of software. Software installed on the Coos Bay network includes a compiler; an assembler; tutorials; and programs for word processing, data base management, spreadsheets, system maintenance, and geographic location and dispatch. Additional expansion will allow for automated incident entry, daily bulletin entry, Uniform Crime Reporting, Master name Index updating, and case logging. Capabilities for downloading and for attaching to other networks are planned for the future. Printout examples illustrate some of the system's capabilities.
