This document reports the demographics of New Castle County (Del.) and its police department; organization of the division and subdivisions, significant activities, police awards, citizens' awards, crime and traffic data, and Officer of the Year award for the year 1988. Included are letters from the County Executive and Director of Public Safety and an address from the Chief of Police.
Abstract
The most significant events of that year were the investigation (including over 1,600 interviews) of the murders of three women and subsequent indictment of a suspect and the division's attainment of accreditation status. It received 96,085 calls for service; made 11,404 criminal arrests, 15,852 traffic arrests, and 4,335 crime prevention checks; issued 9,717 traffic warnings; and investigated 3,912 accidents. The Criminal Investigation Unit investigated 828 cases and cleared 74 percent of them. Investigations included 13 for homicides, 15 for attempted homicide, 37 death investigations, 122 for rape, 91 for other sexual contact, 269 for burglaries, 15 for kidnappings, 38 for robberies, 26 for assaults, 94 for thefts, 4 for arsons, 1 for extortion, 24 for bad checks, and 74 miscellaneous investigations. The Drug Control Unit arrested 268 persons for drug offenses and confiscated 13 motor vehicles, an $86,000 single-family dwelling, a mobile home, and $80,000 in currency. 20 graphs, 14 charts, photos.
