DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIQUE ATTENUATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OXYGEN ABSORPTION BAND CENTERED AT 60 GHZ AND A DISCUSSION OF HOW THESE CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE USED ADVANTAGEOUSLY IN LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.
Abstract
THE OXYGEN ABSORPTION BAND CENTERED AT 60 GHZ HAS UNIQUE PROPAGATION CHARACTERISTICS THAT APPEAR TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPAGATION OVER SHORT TERRESTIAL PATHS. SOME OF THE PRINCIPAL ATTRIBUTES ARE: COMMUNICATIONS PRIVACY, ELIMINATION OF ELECTRO-MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) PROBLEMS, LARGE AVAILABLE BANDWIDTH AND SMALL REQUIRED TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING APERTURES. SIGNALS CAN BE WELL CONFINED TO A SMALL GEOGRAPHICAL AREA BY THE HIGH ATMOSPHERIC ATTENUATION, WHICH IS AS LARGE AS 16 DB/KM NEAR 60 GHZ. IN ADDITION TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF PROPAGATION CHARACTERISTICS IN THE OXYGEN ABSORPTION BAND ACQUIRED OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, THE COMPONENT AND DEVICE TECHNOLOGY HAVE ADVANCED TO A STAGE WHEREIN SERIOUS CONSIDERATION CAN NOW BE GIVEN TO OPERATIONAL SYSTEMS. THIS PAPER TREATS THE ABOVE FACTORS IN DETERMINING THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME EXAMPLES OF SYSTEMS THAT MAKE SPECIAL USE OF THE ABSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 60 GHZ ABSORPTION BAND. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL DATA ARE PRESENTED TO GIVE AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROPAGATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS BAND. THIS DATA INCLUDES THE EFFECTS OF WATER VAPOR, FOG, AND RAIN. STATE-OF-THE ART AND PREDICTED PERFORMANCE OF COMPONENTS AND DEVICES ARE PRESENTED AND CONSIDERED IN FORMULATING THE SYSTEM APPLICATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
