DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF EXPLOSIVES ARE DISCUSSED IN 93 ARTICLES ON THE DETECTION OF EXPLOSIVE VAPORS AND EXPLOSIVES IN BULK, AND TAGGED AND UNTAGGED IDENTIFICATION METHODS.
Abstract
THE EIGHT GENERAL CATEGORIES OF VAPOR DETECTION TECHNIQUES ARE VAPOR CHARACTERIZATION, CALIBRATION, AND STANDARDS; PRECONCENTRATORS, VAPOR BARRIERS, AND TRANSPORT; MASS SPECTROMETRY; SMELL, BIOCHEMICAL, AND CHEMILUMINESCENCE TECHNIQUES; ION MOBILITY SPECTROMETER; ANIMAL OLFACTION; OPTICAL; AND ELECTRON CAPTURE/GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY. THE PROBLEMS OF BULK IDENTIFICATION OF EXPLOSIVES TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF SUCH A SYSTEM WHICH MUST BE CONSIDERED IN TERMS OF SUCH GENERAL BULK DETECTION TECHNIQUES AS X-RAY DETECTION, COMPUTER PROCESSING OF IMAGE DATA, NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE AND NUCLEAR QUADRUPOLE RESONANCE, AND NEUTRON DETECTION TECHNIQUES. THE NUMEROUS ISSUES WHICH HAVE ARISEN CONCERNING THE USE OF TAGGING DETECTION DEVICES AND METHODS ARE ADDRESSED ALONG WITH DISCUSSIONS OF IDENTIFICATION PILOT TEST ANALYSIS, DETECTION TAGGING CONCEPTS, SAFETY-COMPATIBILITY AND SURVIVABILITY TESTING, A DETECTION TAGGING PILOT TEST AND TECHNIQUES IN ID TAGGANT RECOVERY. THE PAPERS IN THE SECTION ON UNTAGGED IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUES FOCUSED ON IN-LAB AND OUT-OF-LAB IDENTIFICATION DEVICES, THE CLASSIFICATION OF RESIDUES FROM A DATA BASE, THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF ANALYSIS, AND TAG RECOVERY. CHARTS, GRAPHS, ILLUSTRATIONS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED FOR SOME OF THE INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES. FOR SPECIFIC ARTICLES, SEE NCJ 58393-58402. (KCP)
