GENERAL TYPES OF SECURITY PROCEDURES ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE KINDS OF EQUIPMENT THAT CAN BE USED IN IMPLEMENTING THOSE PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE CATEGORIES OF SECURITY EQUIPMENT EXAMINED ARE KEYS AND LOCKS, ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS, GLAZING, LIGHTING, SURVEILLANCE/INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEMS, FIRE DETECTION AND SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS, INTEGRATED SECURITY SYSTEMS, AND SAFES (RECORD AND MONEY). IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THOROUGH SECURITY PLANNING PRECEDE THE PURCHASE OF ANY EQUIPMENT SO THAT EACH ITEM OF EQUIPMENT FITS INTO A TOTAL SECURITY DESIGN TAILORED TO THE PROTECTION NEEDS OF A GIVEN OFFICE. IN THE AREA OF KEYS AND LOCKS, IT IS NOTED THAT THE NOTCHED KEYS USED TO ACTIVATE MOST LOCKS CAN BE EASILY DUPLICATED BY LOCKSMITHS OR EVEN RELATIVELY UNTRAINED STORE CLERKS USING SEMIAUTOMATIC KEY CUTTERS. THE KEY CONTROL PROBLEM, HOWEVER, IS CONSIDERED VIRTUALLY ELIMINATED BY THE UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION OF THE EMHART HIGH SECURITY AND MEDECO LOCK CYLINDERS. THEY ARE HIGHLY PICK-RESISTANT; THEIR KEYS MUST BE CUT ON SPECIAL DEVICES CONTROLLED BY THE MANUFACTURER. INDENTED, RATHER THAN NOTCHED, KEYS ARE USED WITH THE KABA, SARGENT KEYSO, AND MULTI-LOCK CYLINDERS. KEYS FOR THEM ARE CUT IN CAREFULLY ADJUSTED DRILL RIGS AND MUST BE DUPLICATED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT THE PLANT. PUSH-BUTTON LOCKS ENTIRELY ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR KEYS. ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS PERFORM MUCH THE SAME FUNCTION AS LOCKS, SECURING DOORS AGAINST ACCESS BY UNAUTHORIZED INDIVIDUALS AND PERMITTING SELECTIVE RESTRICTION OF ACCESS BY OTHERS. LIGHTING FIXTURES, INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEMS, AND THEIR FUNCTIONS ARE DESCRIBED. COMPANIES PROVIDING VARIOUS TYPES OF EQUIPMENT ARE MENTIONED. SPRINKLERS AND CHEMICAL FIRE SUPPRESSANT SYSTEMS SUPPLEMENTED BY STRATEGICALLY PLACED PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS ARE DISCUSSED IN A SECTION ON FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS. INTEGRATED SYSTEMS CONTROL ACCESS TO A BUILDING, SENSE INTRUSION, AND PROVIDE COMMUNICATIONS WITH SECURITY GUARDS AND BUILDING OCCUPANTS DURING AN EMERGENCY, THUS BECOMING, IN EFFECT, AN EMERGENCY SECURITY COMMAND POST. VARIOUS TYPES OF CONTAINERS FOR STORING MONEY AND RECORDS ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. (RCB)
