A NEW GRAPHIC ARTS PROCESS, 'IMAGE 'N TRANSFER' OR INT IS DESCRIBED, AND A RECENT CASE ILLUSTRATING ITS USE BY CHECK FORGERS IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
INT IS A NEW VARIATION OF DRY TRANSFER LETTERING, OR TRANSFERRING LETTERS FROM THEIR CARRIER SHEET ONTO PAPER OR OTHER MEDIUM BY RUBBING. AN ORIGINAL DOCUMENT CONTAINING MATERIAL TO BE TRANSFERRED SUCH AS A SIGNATURE IS FIRST PHOTOGRAPHED. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE IS THEN BONDED TO AN INT SHEET, EXPOSED TO ULTRA-VIOLET LIGHT, AND AN IMAGE FROM THE NEGATIVE IS REPRODUCED ONTO THE INT SHEET WITH SPECIAL DEVELOPER. INT MATERIAL CAN BE APPLIED AS ANY DRY TRANSFER LETTERING, AND IS SAID TO PRODUCE DURABLE, HEAT RESISTANT COPIES. STARTER KITS ARE INEXPENSIVE AND READILY AVAILABLE. INT WAS USED IN WASHINGTON, D.C. WITHIN THE PAST 2 YEARS BY CHECK FORGERS FOILING MERCHANTS' CHECK-CASHING SAFEGUARDS. TO BE CASHED, CHECKS MUST CONTAIN THE INDIVIDUAL'S NAME AND BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER PRINTED ON THE CHECK. THE CHECK FORGERS OVERCAME THE SAFEGUARDS BY REPRODUCING STOLEN CHECKS OR PERSONALIZED BLANK COUNTER CHECKS AND ALTERING ONE OR MORE NUMBERS IN THE BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER THROUGH INT. THE GROUP SUCCESSFULLY PASSED CHECKS WORTH $60,000 OVER 6 MONTHS. A FEW ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
