FINAL REPORT AND EVALUATION OF A 1971 CONFERENCE WHICH USED THE CASE METHOD TO CONSIDER CASE HISTORIES OF TEN CONFRONTATIONS WHICH HAD OCCURRED IN UNIVERSITY, COMMUNITY, AND BUSINESS SETTINGS.
Abstract
PARTICIPANTS FROM THESE THREE SECTORS ATTENDED THE CONFERENCE WHERE, IT WAS HOPED, THEY WOULD GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE CAUSES, NATURE, AND EFFECTIVE HANDLING OF CONFRONTATIONS. EVALUATION IS BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH PARTICIPANTS, CONDUCTED TWO MONTHS AFTER THE CONFERENCE. BASED ON THOSE INTERVIEWS. THE REPORT CONCLUDES THAT THE CONFERENCE MADE CONFRONTATIONS MORE PREDICTABLE AND LESS THREATENING FOR PARTICIPANTS, GIVING THEM INCREASED SELFCONFIDENCE AND AN EXPANDED SENSE OF THE CONSTRUCTIVE ROLES THEY PERSONALLY COULD PLAY. A DIVERSE GROUP OF PARTICIPANTS CAME AWAY FEELING THAT THEY COULD SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, HOWEVER DIVERSE, AND BRING THEM TO BEAR ON THEIR OWN PRACTICAL PROBLEMS. MOST PARTICIPANTS GAINED GREATER UNDERSTANDING AND SYMPATHY FOR THE VALUES AND POSITIONS OF STUDENTS AS WELL AS FOR THE PRESSURES AND LIMITATIONS UNDER WHICH UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS OPERATE. APPENDIXES INCLUDE SUMMARIES OF FINDINGS OF PRECONFERENCE RESEARCH.
