These 35 papers examine the nature and epidemiology of AIDS and public health and policy issues related to efforts to address it, with emphasis on policy issues related to the New England states.
Abstract
Individual papers consider the public policy implications clinical spectrum of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections, the factors promoting progression from the HIV seropositive state to AIDS, neuropsychiatric complications of HIV infection, AIDS in children, and the search for an AIDS vaccine. Further papers focus on the psychological impact of AIDS, HIV antibody screening and testing, ethical issues in AIDS research, the costs of medical care of AIDS, and insurance issues. Additional papers discuss the role of education in AIDS prevention, interventions to produce behavioral change in homosexual men at risk of AIDS, HIV in intravenous drug users, minorities and HIV infection, women and HIV infection, and political issues related to AIDS. Tables, figures, photographs, chapter reference notes, glossary, and lists of resources available in New England and nationally.
