After a review of major factors that are undermining social order and values in American society, this video provides parents with guidelines for raising their children so they can make constructive contributions to society.
Abstract
One of the threats to social stability and safety in American society is alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse causes and contributes to physical and mental illness, behavioral problems, loss of productivity, unemployment, financial difficulties, and family disintegration. Drug abuse has similar effects. Media portrayals of violence desensitize persons to the value of human life and may stimulate violent behaviors. The aforementioned factors, among others, are contributing to the decay of the family unit. Parents must assume responsibility for enlightened and effective parenting if the next generation is to counter social disintegration. Constructive parenting involves building self-esteem in children by guiding them to achievements in worthwhile activities, praising them for positive behaviors, listening to their feelings as well as their words, and recognizing their uniqueness. Parents must also teach their children ethical behavior that consists of courtesy and respect toward others, honesty, and sharing. Children must be taught self-discipline that enables them to work toward satisfying goals rather than expect immediate gratification. Children must also be taught to rely on themselves which includes gaining confidence in decisionmaking and accepting the consequences of their decisions.
