Statistics in this annual report for fiscal year 1977-78 represent the number, types, and dispositions of arrests for all parolees in New Jersey.
Abstract
The data show that almost three-quarters of the individuals arrested were 21 years old or older. Persons aged 18 to 20 accounted for the second highest arrest rate (22 percent). A total of 60 percent of all arrests occurred within the first year on parole, 74 percent within 18 months, and 94 percent within 2 years. Data indicate that 41 percent of all recorded arrests for new offenses were disposed of as guilty by court action, as compared to the dismissal rate of 15 percent. A total of 3,015 individuals accounted for all of the 5,112 arrests that occurred during the period. Approximately one-third of the 8,987 persons who were being supervised during the fiscal year were arrested. Of the 285 persons arrested for technical parole violations, 174 were returned to institutions as parole violators. Of the 4,827 arrests for new offenses requiring court action, 434 resulted in a court commitment to a penal or correctional institution. Data tables make up most of the report.
