This report presents inmate statistics on the New Jersey as of December 31, 1995, with emphasis on their offenses, demographic characteristics, and sentence lengths.
Abstract
Forty-three percent of the inmates were committed for crimes against persons, including homicide, sexual assault, assault, robbery, kidnapping, sex offenses, and other personal offenses. Thirty-three percent were committed for drug law offenses, including possession, sale, and distribution. More than 90 percent of the drug law offenses were sale or distribution offenses. The median term for adult offenders was 7 years. Fifty-one percent of the inmates have sentences that include parole ineligibility terms. Fifty-two percent are age 30 years or under. Sixty-four percent are black, 18 percent are white, and 18 percent are Hispanic. Tables, figures, and maps
