This document provides offender characteristics in correctional institutions in New Jersey on January 8, 2001.
Abstract
The selected characteristics compiled are Base Offense at Admission, total Term at Admission, Ethnicity, Age, County of Commitment and Mandatory Minimum Term. The Prison Complex includes New Jersey State Prison, Central Reception and Assignment Facility, East Jersey State Prison, Bayside State Prison, Riverfront State Prison, Mid-State, Southern State, Northern State Prison, South Woods, Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women and the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Forty percent of all residents were committed for crimes against persons that include homicide, sexual assault, aggravated/simple assault, assault, robbery, kidnapping, other sex offenses, and other person offenses. Thirty-four percent of all residents were committed for narcotics law violations, including possession, sale and distribution. Over 90 percent of all narcotics law violations were sale/distribution offenses. The median term for residents is 6 years. Thirty-three percent of all residents were committed with maximum sentences of 10 years or more. Of the total, 4 percent were serving life sentences and 15 offenders were under capital sentence. Fifty-seven percent of residents housed in the State system have sentences that include parole ineligibility terms. Forty-five percent of all residents were 30 years of age or younger. The median age for inmates in adult facilities was 32. Sixty-three percent of residents were Black, while 19 percent were White and 18 percent were Hispanic. Of the 21 counties, 10 (Atlantic, Bergen, Camden, Essex, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Passaic, and Union) accounted for 83 percent of total residents. Essex County was the highest contributor with 18 percent.
