THE QUESTION-AND-ANSWER APPROACH IS USED IN THIS BOOKLET ISSUED BY THE DHEW INDIAN AND MIGRANT DIVISION OF THE CHILDREN'S BUREAU TO DISCUSS CHILD ABUSE IN THE U.S.
Abstract
THE INCIDENCE OF CHILD ABUSE (I.E., ONE MILLION CHILD ABUSE CASES PER YEAR, RESULTING IN 2000 DEATHS) IS NOTED AS OCCURRING IN ALL SOCIOECONOMIC CLASSES; KNOWLEDGE OF THE REAL CAUSES IS SUPPLIED ONLY BY STUDIES SHOWING THE LEARNED AND REPETITIVE NATURE OF THIS BEHAVIOR TYPE (ABUSED CHILDREN BECOME ABUSIVE PARENTS). ALERTING SIGNS FOR THE FOUR TYPES OF CHILD ABUSE (PHYSICAL ABUSE, PHYSICAL ABUSE AND EMOTIONAL NEGLECT, EMOTIONAL AND VERBAL ABUSE, AND SEXUAL ABUSE) ARE LISTED AS THEY CAN BE DETECTED BOTH IN THE CHILD AND IN THE PARENT. SOCIETAL, INSTITUTIONAL, AND PERSONAL FACTORS THAT CAN LEAD TO CHILD ABUSE ARE EXAMINED, WITH EXAMPLES OF THE CONSEQUENCES SUCH ABUSE CAN HAVE FOR THE COMMUNITY, THE ABUSERS, AND THE VICTIMS. THE MORE LIKELY TYPES OF ABUSIVE PARENTS AND TRAITS OF CHILDREN MORE LIKELY TO BE ABUSED ARE PRESENTED. THE REASONS WHY NEIGHBORS, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS SHOULD REPORT CHILD ABUSE, AND HOW TO DO THIS, ARE PROVIDED. --IN SPANISH. (LGR)
