This report presents statistical tabular data reflecting criminal activity in New Mexico during calendar year 1978; crime rates, arrest statistics, and some comparative data from previous years are included.
Abstract
There were 132 murders, 530 rapes, 1,362 robberies, and 4,495 aggravated assaults reported during 1978. Moreover, 16,073 burglaries, 36,126 larcenies, and 3,915 motor vehicle thefts were recorded. The serious crime rate per 1,000 population was 51.4, down from the 53.7 rate for 1977. Firearms were used on 65.5 percent of the 132 murders reported; 118 of the murders were cleared by arrest. A total of 530 rapes were reported, of which 45.9 percent were cleared by arrest. In 1978, law enforcement agencies reported 3,915 motor vehicle thefts amounting to approximately $9.5 million; 3,240 of these stolen vehicles were recovered. In addition, police recovered $9.4 million in property stolen during the year. There were 669 law enforcement officers assaulted and 1 killed during 1978. The number of officers assaulted increased by 17.1 percent over 1977. The largest number, 176 assaults, were on officers responding to family disturbance calls. Extensive tables compose the report.
