This brochure describes the organization and functions of education programs for inmates in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, including the new partnerships that have been established both within the Bureau and with the outside communities.
Abstract
Over 11,000 Federal inmates are enrolled in educational and vocational programs annually. These programs include adult basic education; general education development; adult continuing education; and occupational, postsecondary, and social education. Recreation and leisure activities also are provided. These programs are reinforced and supplemented by testing, counseling, libraries, and community resources. Administrative reorganization during fiscal year 1984 established the Industries, Education, and Training Division to coordinate these related programs and services and placed it under the domain of Federal Prison Industries (UNICOR). Innovations in the provision of these programs include paid apprenticeship programs; contractual and voluntary participation; and certification programs in such highly marketable fields as optics, culinary arts, data processing, landscape technology, and drafting and computer-assisted drafting.
