This report presents statistical information for all coronial cases completed during 1990 in New South Wales; a coronial case is defined as a death investigated by the coroner or by a clerk of court acting under delegation from the coroner.
Abstract
Data for all coronial cases cover the deceaseds' age, sex, marital status, country of birth, employment status, manner of death, type of death, type of coronial matter, time between death and finalization, death rates per 100,000 population (age, sex, and statistical division of residence of deceased), and court where the finding was determined. Separate data are provided for various types of deaths including suicides, accidental drug deaths, traffic accidents, industrial accidents, domestic accidents, sporting and recreational accidents, homicides, natural causes, deaths in custody, and other accidents. The number of deaths due to homicide rose from 94 in 1989 to 17 in 1990, an increase of 27 percent. The number of deaths in custody rose from 12 in 1989 to 17 in 1990, an increase of 42 percent. All of the increase in custody deaths occurred in prison. There were no deaths in police custody in 1990. 89 tables
