ANALYSIS OF THE CAPITAL OFFENSES COMMITTED BY MALE JUVENILES IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, AND AN ANALYSIS OF AGE TRENDS AMONG THESE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
NO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT TRENDS WERE FOUND FOR THE RATES OF MURDER AND MANSLAUGHTER. A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE WAS FOUND FOR THE RATES OF RAPE. WHEN THE RATES OF RAPE WERE BROKEN DOWN INTO INDIVIDUAL AND PACK RAPES, BOTH TYPES OF RAPE SHOWED A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE, BUT THE RATES OF PACK RAPES WERE FOUND TO HAVE INCREASED 2.5 TIMES FASTER THAN THE RATES OF INDIVIDUAL RAPES. THE PROPORTION OF PACK RAPES IN THE TOTAL NUMBER OF RAPES INCREASED FROM 0 PERCENT IN 1956-58 TO 61 PERCENT IN 1967-69. COMPARED WITH ADULT RATES, THE JUVENILE RATES OF CHARGES OF RAPE SHOWED A FOUR TIMES LARGER INCREASE - ADULT RATES INCREASED BY 192 PERCENT, JUVENILE RATES BY 773 PERCENT. THE METHODS OF ASSESSING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ANNUAL FLUCTUATIONS OF FUTURE RATES, AND OF THE AGE OF JUVENILES BEING CHARGED, WERE INDICATED. THE FINDINGS WERE THEN DISCUSSED IN THE LIGHT OF THE AVAILABLE LITERATURE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
