THE GROWING PROBLEM OF BICYCLE THEFTS ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES IS DESCRIBED, AND POSSIBLE THEFT PREVENTION AND DETERRENCE METHODS WHICH MAY BE IMPLEMENTED ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR NOTES THAT THERE ARE SPECIAL PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH THE PREVENTION OF BICYCLE THEFT, THE RECOVERY OF STOLEN BIKES, AND THE APPREHENSION OF THE THIEVES. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ENACTMENT OF LAWS TO REQUIRE THE LICENSING OF BICYCLES AND THE RECORDING OF SERIAL NUMBERS WOULD AID IN THE DETECTION OF STOLEN BICYCLES AND THE RETURN OF STOLEN PROPERTY. THE AUTHOR ALSO RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING PREVENTION MEASURES FOR COLLEGE CAMPUSES; REGISTRATION OF BICYCLES; PROVISION OF SAFE BICYCLE STORAGE AREAS; SUCH AS BIKE RACKS OR BIKE LOCKERS; AND INCREASED LAW ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS TO APPREHEND BICYCLE THIEVES. FINALLY, THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT STOLEN BICYCLES BE ENTERED IN THE STOLEN ARTICLE FILE OF THE FBI'S NATIONAL CRIME INFORMATION CENTER TO AID IN THE RETURN OF STOLEN BICYCLES TO THE PROPER OWNER.
