REVIEW OF SOME OF THE CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS FUNDED MAINLY BY THE GOVERNMENT AND PERFORMED IN THE FIELDS OF COUNSELING, PAROLE, AND PREVENTION OF DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
THIS WORK STATES THAT EXPERIMENTS WITH SMALL CASELOADS, PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES, GROUP COUNSELING, AND USE OF PREDICTION TABLES FOR EARLY DETECTION OF PRESUMED FUTURE DELINQUENTS HAVE DEMONSTRATED EITHER THAT THESE MEASURES HAVE LITTLE EFFECT ON POST-TREATMENT CRIME RATES OR THAT THEY ARE BENEFICIAL ONLY TO LIMITED CATEGORIES OF OFFENDERS. THE AUTHOR SAYS IT IS APPARENT THAT REDUCTION OF CRIME REQUIRES A CAREFUL RESTRICTION OF MANY TYPES OF TREATMENT TO THE TYPES OF OFFENDERS FOR WHOM THEY ARE SUITABLE, IN ADDITION TO A SEARCH FOR NEW AND BETTER TREATMENT AND PREVENTION METHODS.
