THIS STUDY PRESENTS THE PUBLIC'S VIEW OF POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS AS PERCEIVED BY NYC PATROLMEN.
Abstract
PATROLMEN BELIEVE THAT THE PUBLIC WANTS MORE AGGRESSIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THEY BELIEVE THAT POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS WOULD IMPROVE IF MORE PROTECTION COULD BE PROVIDED, PARTICULARLY BY FOOT PATROLS. PATROLMEN THINK THEIR ROLE IS MISUNDERSTOOD BY THE NYC PUBLIC. THEY BELIEVE THAT A COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM WOULD OVERCOME THIS MISUNDERSTANDING. A MAJORITY OF THE PATROLMEN ACKNOWLEDGE A DEFICIENCY IN THEIR POLICE TRAINING IN HUMAN RELATIONS AND PSYCHOLOGY. INCLUDED ARE THE VARIOUS QUESTIONNAIRES GIVEN TO THE 1369 PATROLMEN WHO PARTICIPATED, PLUS THE RESULTS OF THEIR ATTITUDE SURVEY.
