REPORT FINDS RATES ARE UP SIGNIFICANTLY IN MOST CRIME CLASSIFICATIONS.
Abstract
OF THE MAJOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES IN 1975, ONLY RAPE AND NEGLIGENT MANSLAUGHTER UNDERWENT A RATE DECLINE, 3.4 PERCENT AND 21.6 PERCENT RESPECTIVELY. OTHER MAJOR CRIMES INCREASED FROM 6 PERCENT TO 14 PERCENT. THIS REPORT, WHICH IS THE FIRST OF SUCH REPORTS REQUIRED ANNUALLY UNDER A 1974 LAW, ALSO SHOWS THAT VIOLENT AND NON-VIOLENT CRIMES PEAKED IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. THIS FINDING RUNS AGAINST THE POPULAR CONCEPT THAT VIOLENT CRIMES OCCUR MORE OFTEN IN SUMMER MONTHS AND NON-VIOLENT CRIMES OCCUR MORE FREQUENTLY IN COLDER MONTHS. THE REPORT SHOWED THE WAY NEW YORK CITY STATISTICS WEIGH HEAVILY ON THE OVERALL PICTURE.
