Abstract
'Tree' diagrams portray case outcomes and processing times. After presenting statewide statistics, the data are broken down by New York City, other State metropolitan areas, and nonmetropolitan areas. Additional displays show statewide case processing by offender sex, race, age, and crime class. Other data address the 19 misdemeanor arrest offenses most often disposed during the year. Figures present summary counts and percentages of cases by dispositional outcome as well as elapsed time between arrest and disposition. Outcome and time displays presented in pairs indicate the counts on which processing time calculations were based. The unit of count is the arrest event, so offenders with multiple dispositions are counted each time they were disposed. The appendixes present definitions and technical specifications, a description of the selection of charge and disposition for analysis, and processing summaries for felony arrests disposed in 1981. Attachments include the arrest/fingerprint card, the lower court criminal disposition reporting form, the superior court criminal disposition reporting form, and the indictment and prosecution report. Thirty-five figures are provided.
