Major cases in consumer fraud and other protection issues affecting broad cross sections of New Yorkers were successfully concluded. Among the major successes were the ruling that Con Edison had to refund $38 million to consumers and an agreement with Hooker Chemicals and Plastics Corp. for a cleanup of one of the most hazardous toxic waste dump sites in the Nation -- the Hyde Park landfill in Niagara County.

Other cases are discussed in the areas of consumer protection; tenant, homeowner, and homebuyer protection; energy and utility services; environmental protection; and antitrust enforcement. Activities in the areas of civil rights, protection of workers, investor protection, regulation of charities and trusts, criminal investigations and prosecutions, defense of State law and public policy, prisoner-related litigation, claims and collections, and taxation and revenue issues are also noted.
