Abstract
The total number of felony arrests for 1996 were 197,350, down 0.3 percent from the previous year. This decrease in arrests was reflected in New York City only, which had a decrease of 1.9 percent to offset increases in arrests in suburban New York City and upstate areas. Total State indictments for 1996 were 65,314, a decrease of 0.2 percent from the previous year. This decrease in indictments occurred in New York City only, where they were down 2.0 percent. Total State felony dispositions were 62,499 in 1996, a 3.3-percent decrease from the previous year. This decrease in dispositions occurred in New York City, down 4.9 percent, and in suburban New York City, down 3.2 percent. In contrast, other upstate-area dispositions increased 1.5 percent during 1996. The total number of convictions statewide were 57,005 in 1996, compared to 58,537 in 1995. The proportion of sentences to State prison decreased less than 1 percent (0.1 percent) to 43.2 percent of all felony convictions, compared to 43.3 percent during 1995. New York City had the highest level of State prison sentences at 49.8 percent, compared to 28.3 percent for suburban New York City and 34.9 percent for upstate areas. 5 tables
