In addition to providing statistics on crime and traffic accidents, this 1977 annual report of the New York State Police discusses the activities of the uniform patrol, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the scientific laboratory, the aviation unit, and the Canine Corps.
Abstract
Notable criminal and traffic incidents and police handling of them are briefly described. Also described are significant drug law enforcement activities, the work of trooper scuba divers, and the results of a study to determine the potential benefits of the CB radio for highway safety. Information is provided on trooper injuries, trooper work in the Blizzard of '77, training, personnel, recordkeeping, awards, and a police summer program for disadvantaged boys. During 1977, State Police arrests rose 6.1 percent to 597,199, compared to 562,631 in 1976. The total number of offenses known increased by 46,214 to 696,140, an increase of 7.1 percent in 1 year. Accident investigations dropped from 51,036 to 49,009. Increased enforcement of the 55 mph limit saw speeding arrests spiral to a record of 299,169. This accounted in large part for an increase in traffic arrests from 519,860 in 1976 to 555,990 in 1977. Fatal accidents investigated declined by 38 to 454. The conviction rate for cases adjudicated from State Police arrests was 87 percent, a jump of 7 percent from the previous year. Photographs and tabular data are given.
