In addition to providing statistics on crime and traffic accidents, this 1978 annual report of the New York State Police discusses the activities of the uniform patrol, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the scientific laboratory, and the Canine Corps.
Abstract
Notable criminal and traffic incidents and police handling of them are briefly described. Activities are described for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, drug law enforcement, the aviation unit, and scuba teams. Information is also provided on personnel, training, recordkeeping, awards, and police athletics. During 1978, State police arrests rose 13.2 percent to 687,861, compared to 597,199 recorded in 1977. The number of offenses known increased 14.1 percent, rising from 696,140 to 794,568. Accident investigations rose slightly from 49,009 to 49,422. Total traffic arrests reached 644,963, a dramatic increase from last year's 555,990. Fatal accident investigations increased by 38 to 492. State police continued to prepare for the supervision of all security and public safety at the 1980 Winter Olympics. The State police weighing detail, which checks trucks on the State's highways, was doubled to more than 80 troopers in an effort to curb overweight violations. The opening of 14 additional satellite offices has brought the statewide total to 49 and has improved communications and coordination between State police, local police, and the public. Tables and photographs are supplied.
