Abstract
Accomplishments of the uniformed force, the highway traffic patrol, the warrant unit, the drug traffic unit, the canine corps, and the aviation and scuba diving units are detailed. Information is also given on police training, recordkeeping, athletics, and the crime laboratory. During 1979, State police arrests dropped 4 percent from 1978, and the total number of offenses decreased by 2.7 percent, from 794,568 to 772,758. During the year a State police facility was completed at Ray Brook, a new troop was established on Long Island, a statewide Violent Felony Warrant Squad was established, and the State police laboratory was expanded. New procedures regarding motor vehicles, the opening of 11 additional State police satellite offices, the production of public service television spots, and the expansion of the police air fleet are also reported. Tables present law enforcement statistics for 1979. Extensive case histories and photographs are included. (Author abstract modified)
