Abstract
Notable crime, rescue, and traffic incidents and police handling of them are briefly described, and State Police activities are portrayed in relation to the 16-day strike of correction officers. Information is also provided on the Violent Felony Warrant Enforcement Unit, intended to provide the coordination, technical assistance, and resources necessary to enable State and local criminal justice agencies to execute promptly arrest warrants involving violent felony offenses. Other data are provided on drug law enforcement, personnel, training, the information system, and TV public service spots. During 1979, State Police arrests dropped 4 percent to 660,162, compared to 687,861 recorded in 1978. The total number of offenses known decreased 2.7 percent from 794,568 to 772,758. Accident investigations fell from 49,422 to 45,639. Traffic arrests of 613,473 constituted a downward trend from 644,963 last year. The decrease in accident investigations is attributed to the slower driving habits under the 55 mph limit. The conviction rate for cases adjudicated from State Police arrests was 85 percent, a 1 percent drop from 1978.
