THE RECRUITMENT, SELECTION, AND GRADUATE-LEVEL EDUCATION OF MINORITY PERSONS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE WAS THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM, SPONSORED BY THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT ALBANY, ESTABLISHED A CURRICULUM TASK FORCE TO COLLECT AND REFINE MINORITY PERSPECTIVE MATERIALS AND TO PREPARE DETAILED COURSE OUTLINES, READING ASSIGNMENTS, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, AND OTHER MATERIALS WITH MINORITY VIEWPOINTS. A RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF MONOGRAPHS ON MINORITIES. A MINORITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM REPRESENTED A LONG-TERM EFFORT TO RECRUIT AND SUPPORT MINORITY STUDENTS. FREQUENT RECRUITMENT VISITS WERE WERE MADE TO COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY IN SEARCH OF PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS FOR THIS PROGRAM. THE RECRUITMENT OF MINORITY STUDENTS AS FELLOWS SHOWED SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT DURING THE PROGRAM'S SECOND YEAR (1978-79). SUCCESS IN THE FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE WAS A HIGH POINT IN OVERALL TRAINING PROGRAM ACTIVITIES. SUPPORTING DATA AND SUGGESTED READINGS ARE PROVIDED. A SHORT DIRECTORY SUPPLIES NAMES OF COLLEGES RECEIVING ANNOUNCEMENTS OF FELLOWSHIPS FOR MINORITY APPLICANTS IN A STATE-BY-STATE FORMAT. DIRECTOR'S NAMES AND THE NAMES AND ADDRESSES FOR OTHER COLLEGES CONTACTED ABOUT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS ARE LISTED ALPHABETICALLY. AN APPENDIX CONTAINS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED TO COLLECT DATA ON SUMMER ACTIVITIES. (DEP)
