This 2001 edition of the NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles presents updated, mandated, and specified requirements and procedures for fire-fighting vehicles in the event of an airport aircraft rescue.
Abstract
In 1960, a draft edition of the NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles (ARFF) was adopted by the National Fire Protection Association. This standard is composed of several mandatory requirements for fire-fighting vehicles in the event of an airport-aircraft rescue. Several revisions have been made since the 1960 edition that include: document utility, conformity with the NFPA Manual of Style, provision of a test method to verify design requirements, and removal of requirements for a separate category of rapid intervention vehicle. A significant change for the current 2001 edition was the combination of major fire-fighting vehicles and combined agent vehicles. In addition, a table was created to offer the requirements in a more concise manner. The report is divided into five chapters followed by Annexes A through F. The chapters cover the following: (1) administration; (2) referenced publications; (3) definitions; (4) ARFF vehicles, specifically weights and dimensions, engine, vehicle drive, towing connections, steering, body, water tank, and premixed foam solutions; and (5) acceptance criteria. Annexes A through F are not part of the requirements of NFPA 414 but offer support and additional related information that includes: (A) explanatory material; (B) requirements for low-voltage electrical systems and warning devices; (C) line voltage electrical systems; (D) aircraft rescue and fire-fighting vehicle questionnaire; (E) Driver's Enhanced Vision System; and (F) informational references.
