The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Information Center Quarterly Summary is a compilation of information received from the directors of corrections in all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This quarter's survey addresses the issue of inmates' possession of pornographic materials.
Abstract
Most agencies indicate that screening for pornography is part of the regular mail screening process; the majority of states permit those materials which are generally available over the counter to the general public, such a "Playboy" and "Penthouse". Also included is information on capacity changes, litigation, legislation, and commissioner changes. A total of 18 responding agencies reported changes in capacity, with all but one experiencing an increase in bedspace. Legislative initiatives addressed such issues as oversight of community corrections, training standards, driving under the influence, and AIDS. A special section of the document provides additional information on AIDS. 2 tables
