In 1989, the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) developed a partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to study technologies that might benefit the corrections community.
Abstract
NIC initiated the project based on the need of correctional practitioners to apply evolving technologies in the workplace. The project has three phases: (1) identify and prioritize correctional problems that might be addressed using NASA technology, (2) review NASA's existing technology base and study the process for transferring that technology to other government or private entities, and (3) select technologies to be developed and modify them for corrections. The project has expanded to encompass additional areas, including the collection of information on how States evaluate new correctional technologies and the conduct of other correctional technology studies. Correctional technology transfer projects that were evaluated and selected for development as part of the NIC/NASA initiative include a computerized literacy tutor program, magnetic resonance imaging for contraband detection, and drug use detection technologies.
