THE ACTIVITIES AND FISCAL STATUS OF A SERVICE ORGANIZATION CONCERNED WITH REFORMING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN SOUTH AFRICA ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CRIME PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION OF OFFENDERS (NICRO) REPORT COVERS THE PERIOD FROM APRIL 1976 THROUGH MARCH 1977. THE REVIEW OF CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES POINTS OUT THE HIGH COST OF CRIME, THE INCREASE IN VIOLENT CRIME IN THE PERIOD REPORTED, AND THE CRIME PREVENTIVE FUNCTIONS OF NICRO. THE INSTITUTE DISTRIBUTED A CRIME PREVENTION GUIDE TO CITIZENS, PROVIDED LECTURE SERVICES, AND ISSUED SPECIAL REPORTS. PLANS FOR AN INTENSIVE MEDIA CAMPAIGN, NEW PUBLICITY MATERIALS, ESTABLISHMENT OF CRIME PREVENTION PANELS IN URBAN AREAS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF A SLIDE/TAPE PROGRAM ON CRIME PREVENTION ARE NOTED. THE REPORT ALSO DESCRIBES BRIEFLY THE ACTIVITIES OF A COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY INTO THE PENAL SYSTEM, THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW NICRO JOURNAL ON CRIMINAL LAW AND CRIMINOLOGY, AND THE SOCIAL WORK ACTIVITIES PERFORMED AT NINE NICRO BRANCH OFFICES OFFERING SERVICES TO RELEASED PRISONERS AND PRISONERS' FAMILIES. NICRO'S ROLE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY IS NOTED, AS ARE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW NICRO BRANCH AND NICRO'S REDIRECTION OF EMPHASIS TOWARD GROUP WORK AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION. STATISTICS ON NICRO'S SERVICES TO EX-PRISONERS AND FAMILIES OF PRISONERS AND ON THE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCES ARE INCLUDED. -- IN AFRIKAANS AND ENGLISH.
