This video and transcript cover opening remarks by Laurie Robinson - Assistant Attorney General, Office of Justice Programs - at the 2010 National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Conference, in which she discusses OJP's progress in making science and associated evidence-based policy and practice key features of OJP's work.
Abstract
She mentions OJP's last year's launching of a series of internal working groups that explored how the agency can disseminate information to policymakers and practitioners about evidence-based approaches in criminal justice. This has resulted in the establishment of an agency-wide Evidence Integration Initiative (E2I). The purpose of E2I is to improve the quality and quantity of evidence the agency generates and then to ensure that this evidence informs program and policy decisions. This effort is emphasizing not only rigorous testing standards but also the benefits of other research methods that may not have the same high threshold. Another recent step has been the establishment of an OJP science advisory board that will be appointed by the Attorney General. This body will be composed of both academics, practitioners, and other leaders. The board will ensure that program development is based in the highest level of scientific rigor. E2I also emphasizes collaboration between practitioners and researchers in setting research agendas that will reflect the needs of those working in various criminal justice fields.
