Written by an ex-offender who served 5.5 years in separate terms in Federal and State prisons, this manual explains the psychological changes that take place during the last 3 months of incarceration and the first 3 months after release and provides practical guidelines for adjusting to life in the family and community.
Abstract
The guidelines are also directed to the family members of an offender. They emphasize the need before release to expect anxiety, communicate openly, avoid false expectations, make short-term plans, and set long-term goals. Family members are advised to offer understanding and support, make verbal contracts about how to handle difficult situations that are expected, and take care of themselves physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. After release, initial shock, confusion, and depression are normal, and patience and open communication are needed. Offenders should avoid isolating themselves, find a job immediately, and focus on positive goals rather than on anger and self-pity. Order form for other manuals from the same publisher.
