This evaluation of node-link mapping in substance abuse treatment used probationers' ratings of group counseling.
Abstract
Node-link mapping produces a graphic display of verbal information. Maps consist of shaped "nodes" containing single ideas or propositions that are connected by labeled, arrowed "links" to show relationships between the nodes. Researchers in human cognition and memory have recommended the use of visual representations to reduce unnecessary verbiage and make ideas easier to reference and remember. Research to date has indicated that node-link mapping can enhance outcomes for drug-abuse counseling. The current study extends this research by examining counseling session evaluations collected from probationers who participated in 26 group sessions at a residential substance abuse treatment facility (approximately 18 probationers in each session). Sessions were divided into those that involved a large amount of mapping (n=13) and those that used little or no mapping (n=13). Participants rated sessions that involved more extensive mapping as significantly deeper and as involving more group participation. 1 table and 44 references
