FOURTEEN PAPERS WHICH GREW OUT OF A JOINT CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION AND THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS.
Abstract
SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, LIKE OTHER HUMAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, FACE INCREASING WORK LOADS WHICH MUST BE MET WITH LIMITED FUNDS AND STAFF. ONE WAY OF AUGMENTING A PROFESSIONAL STAFF IS THE USE OF SUPERVISED NONPROFESSIONAL AIDES FOR ROUTINE TASKS. THESE PAPERS DEAL WITH SUCH TOPICS AS THE CURRENT RANGE OF ACTIVITIES OF NONPROFESSIONALS IN THE MENTAL HEALTH FIELD, THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE PARAPROFESSIONAL TO HIS PROFESSIONAL COUNTERPART, EFFECTIVE MEANS AND SOURCES OF TRAINING AND THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS IN ESTABLISHING GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF NONPROFESSIONALS. CONGRESSIONAL ACTIONS RELATING TO THE USE OF SUBPROFESSIONALS IN THE HUMAN SERVICES ARE REVIEWED AS ARE PROGRAMS IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A CHART OF RECENT LEGISLATION DEALING WITH PARAPROFESSIONALS AND WORKERS IN VARIOUS SUPPORT SERVICES. (SNI ABSTRACT)
