NARRATIVE AND STATISTICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FORMAL STRUCTURE OF THE SYSTEM, ANALYZING THE BASIC GOALS TOWARD WHICH THE SYSTEM IS WORKING.
Abstract
OFFICIAL STATISTICS, SURVEYS, AND INTERVIEWS WITH THE STAFF AT 20 INSTITUTIONS IN THE STATE (LAND) ARE USED TO PROVIDE A COMPOSITE PICTURE OF FACILITIES, OPERATIONS, PROGRAMS, STAFF, AND INMATES. THE STUDY FEATURES A DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLES, FUNCTIONS, AND INTERACTIONS OF STAFF AND INMATES IN PRISON SOCIETY. THE AREAS OF INTERACTION DISCUSSED ARE SYSTEMS OF SANCTION AND CONTROL BY EACH GROUP, RESEARCH ON INMATE PERSONALITIES, AND INMATE WORK AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTIONS IS CURRENTLY IN A STATE OF TRANSITION AND INCONSISTENCY IN WHICH THE ESSENTIAL RATIONALE OF THE SYSTEM IS CHANGING FROM AN EMPHASIS ON THE PROTECTION OF SOCIETY TO ONE OF REHABILITATING THE INMATE. THE STATISTICS USED IN THE STUDY ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM IN THE APPENDIX. --IN GERMAN
