This resource publication is based on materials presented in the workshops and short courses of a Canadian conference that sought creative, indigenous solutions to the problems confronting northern youth and to explore innovative, aboriginal, and community-based alternatives to the current justice and child welfare approaches imported from southern Canada.
Abstract
The material is presented in eight modules. The first module, "Youth in the Community," contains papers on the role of parents, the role of Friendship Centres, the proposal to establish a local judiciary in Povungnituk, Quebec, and the creation and operation of crisis intervention programs in Grassy Narrows, Ontario. The second module focuses on "Youth Mental Health" and discusses the mobilization of the community to promote mental health for youth, the development of mental health programs for youth, and role models for youth. A module on "Program Initiatives for Youth" discusses efforts to address school failure and unemployment among youth in Northern Saskatchewan and alcohol, drug, and substance abuse programs. Other modules focus on the teaching of survival skills and cultural awareness to northern youth, youth and the law, youth and the circuit court, philosophies and programs for confined youth, and welfare and placement programs for youth.
